SEASONS OF MUURAISLAMPI

The calendar here is measured in what turns up.

Not four neat seasons. Overlapping windows of sound, insects, birds, animals, darkness and pond life. Weather moves the boundaries, so this is an observed rhythm rather than a timetable.

SPRING

Frog season

The lampi and wet ground become audible before summer settles in.

SPRING + AUTUMN

Swans and larger waterfowl

The lampi sometimes becomes a stopping place for swans and larger ducks or other waterfowl.

EARLY SUMMER

Mosquito season

A real Finnish forest season rather than something to pretend away. Preparation matters.

SUMMER

Dragonfly season

Dragonflies and small insects over the water make the lampi feel visibly alive.

WARM SUMMER WINDOWS

Flying-ant days

Brief, intense appearances rather than a neat month on the calendar.

LATE SUMMER

Grasshopper evenings

As the day quiets down, grasshoppers and other insects can become the dominant evening soundtrack.

LATE SUMMER + AUTUMN

Deer ked season

The forest changes again when hirvikärpänen - the deer ked - appears.

OCCASIONAL NIGHTS

Raccoon dog calls

Supi / raccoon dog calls are part of the wider animal soundscape, not a scheduled attraction.

YEAR-ROUND

Woodpeckers

Woodpeckers are recurring neighbours in the forest; spring drumming can make them especially noticeable.

DARK SEASON

Stars and possible aurora

Low surrounding light makes the main constellations easy to see on clear nights. Aurora can sometimes appear, including in autumn, but is never guaranteed.

ALL YEAR

No-neighbour season

The one season that does not move much: the feeling of having the forest around you without houses next door.

ALL YEAR
No-neighbour season.
